The newly added 22 occupations to PMSOL

The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs Alex Hawke MP announced that there will be the additional 22 occupations on the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) to support Australia’s ongoing recovery from the impact of COVID-19. Currently, there are 41 occupations in total in PMSOL. The Morrison government will keep making efforts to encourage skilled migration. Visa applicants who have occupations listed in PMSOL such as chefs, civil engineers and software programmers will be prioritized and eligible for a travel exemption. Judging from the added occupations, we can see that the Australian government is valuing three fields; Engineering and IT occupations for a number of infrastructure and construction projects: Accountants and Auditors for upcoming taxation seasons: Chefs for hospitality sections. Particularly, the most noteworthy change would be the addition of “Chefs” to the list.  In order to determine these changes, the Government has engaged with small, medium and large Australian employers, business leaders and industry bodies. The hospitality sector has been devastated by long lasting lockdown. Recovery of this sector is urgent and the Government started to pay attention to this industry.  The roles in hospitality sector might be added more in this list in the future.

However, it can be expected that these additions are temporary and unsettled. It is crucial to get the latest information regarding skilled migrations and employer-sponsored visa application.
