Here’s more good news for students aspiring to study in Australia!
If you have been considering studying in Australia, there is one more reason to go ahead with your decision: the latest update on the new 485 post-study work stream visa! Now you can live and work in regional Australia after completing your studies.
The Australian Government’s Department of Education shared a few announcements:
- From 1 July 2023, international higher education graduates with eligible qualifications will be allowed to stay and work in Australia for an extra two years.
- The cap on the number of hours international students can work in a fortnight will be increased from 40 to 48 hours.
The Australian Government has announced an additional measures to support students, including:
- Increase the stay period for master’s by coursework graduates so they may remain in Australia permanently.
- Temporary Graduate Visa applicants from the VET sector who are already in Australia will be allowed to stay for up to 24 months, on a temporary basis.

The Australian Government has recently announced an extension of post-study work rights, allowing graduates to stay in the country for two more years.
- A two-year post-study work rights extension is available to international graduates of selected degree programs in areas of skill shortage.
- The Government has recently announced that post-study work rights for selected degrees in areas of verified skills shortages will increased from:
- 2 years to 4years for select bachelor’s degrees
- Three years to five years for select master’s degrees
- 4 years to 6years for all PhDs
What is 485 post-study work stream visa?
Stay back and work in Australia for a longer duration! The new post-study work stream visa, offered by the Australian Government, enables you to study and live in designated regional areas of the country for up to five years. This is a great update as now you can plan for your career in a better manner, having a wider range of areas accessible to study and work.
Who can apply?
If you are an international student and wish to work in Australia for a longer period of time (up to five years), you may be eligible for this visa. It allows you complete study and work rights, as well as freedom to travel to and from Australia as long as it is valid.
Things you should know:
- This post-study work visa doesn’t have an occupations list, so you can apply for it regardless of your field of study. However, make sure you are studying at the right levels.
- You must have a degree from a course that is registered with CRICOS
- You don’t need to have a skills assessment before applying for this visa.
- To be eligible for admission, you must meet the English language proficiency requirements.
Extending post-study work rights will help you stay in the country longer after finishing your studies, which means that you can find employment more quickly and make your way to Australia.
