Novak Djokovic has been granted a visa to play in the 2023 Australian Open after his three-year ban was lifted

Novak Djokovic has been granted a visa to play in the 2023 Australian Open after his three-year ban was lifted.

In January 2022, Djokovic arrived Down Under for the World Cup tournament only to ultimately be deported after immigration minister Alex Hawke cancelled his visa on the grounds that Djokovic might cause ‘civil unrest’.

But according to reports in Australia, new immigration minister Andrew Giles has decided to let the tennis star enter the country, overturning a three-year ban on him entering.

Djokovic arrived in Australia in January believing that he had the exemption required to travel to Melbourne Park and compete despite not having taken a vaccine against Covid-19.

But the tennis player was detained by immigration authorities before ultimately being deported, with Hawke ruling that the 21-time Grand Slam winner could be perceived as a “symbol of a community of anti-vaccine sentiment.”

The Australian government has since relaxed its requirements for the immunisation of travellers, allowing unvaccinated individuals to enter the country in certain circumstances. To overturn the ban, immigration officials must be satisfied that there are compelling reasons for a traveller to return.
