Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482) + Common FAQs answered

On December 7th, 2024, the Australian Government has effectively made substantial updates to the temporary skilled visa program, replacing Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa with the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, while the visa subclass remains 482. 

Thee SID visa contains 3 streams: 

  1. Specialist Skill Stream
  2. Core Skill Stream
  3. Labour Agreement Stream

Unlikely the previous TSS visa, all pathways (Streams) under the Skills in Demand (SID) visa offer a clear path to permanent residency in Australia through the transition stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) (subclass 186) visa.  

In addition, the SID visa has become more flexible as visa holders now has 180 days to secure a new sponsor without breaching conditions.

Specialist Skills Stream

This stream is designed for highly skilled professionals and is available if your employer wishes to sponsor you (as an overseas skilled worker) for periods of up to four years in most ANZSCO occupations.

  • Meet the specialist income threshold of $135,000 annual salary
  • Available for all ANZSCO occupations except trade workers, machinery operators, and labourers
  • Minimum of 1 year full-time work experiences (Can be accumulated from part-time and casual work experiences)
  • Flexible occupation requirements
  • Targeted to have a 7 days processing time
  • Pathway to permanent residence (PR)

Core Skills Stream

This stream is designed for skilled workers who have their occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL), and if your employer wishes to sponsor you.

  • Minimum annual salary of $73,150
  • Must be in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List
  • The occupations on the CSOL list now increased to 456, with caveat decrease from 26 to 14
  • Targeted to have a 21 days processing time
  • Pathway to permanent residence

Labour Agreement Stream

This stream is available if your employer has entered into a labour agreement, and wishes to sponsor you. 

There are five types of labour agreements:

  • Company Specific labour agreements
  • Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMA)
  • Global Talent Employer Sponsored (GTES) agreements
  • Industry labour agreements
  • Project agreements

#1 Do I need a relevant degree to apply with one year of experience? 

Yes, your degree must be closely related to the occupation you’re applying for. If you don’t have a degree, additional work experience may be required.

 

#2 Does 482 SID visa have pathways to permanent residency (PR)?

Yes, all streams of the SID visa now contains a pathway to permanent residency under the Transition stream of the 186 Visa. 

 

#3 Can I combine multiple years of work experience for the 186 visa?

Yes, if the positions are similar, you can combine your work experience to meet the two-year requirement for transitioning to the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa.

 

#4 What if my occupation isn’t on the CSOL list?

You can still apply under the Specialist Skill Stream if your salary is over AUD $135,000. No occupation list restrictions apply here!

 

#5 If a nomination was applied for before 7th Dec and the occupation is now removed from CSOL, can a Sc 482 visa application be made based on the lodged nomination before 7th Dec in this occupation?

Yes, if the nomination was lodged before7 Dec 2024, the occupation can still be used even if removed from the CSOL and a visa can be lodged under the SID program.
