Big Changes Coming to Skillselect:
Find Out How They Affect You!
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is considering input from numerous stakeholders to shape a new reformed points system. This system is expected to be introduced either sometime in FY2024-25 or at the beginning of FY2025-26, though exact timelines have not yet been provided.
Earlier this year in April, the Australian Government published a discussion paper titled “Review of the Points Test.” This document highlighted significant limitations in Australia’s current points test, asserting that it does not effectively identify applicants with the best potential to contribute to the country over the long term. The paper also outlined proposed changes to the points test.
Reform is imminent, and by examining the Grattan Institute’s proposal, one of the major stakeholders, we can anticipate the potential aspects of these changes.
Grattan Institute’s Proposal
The Grattan Institute, a leading Australian public policy think tank, has submitted its proposal, which includes the following key recommendations:
-
Continue with the current points test system for FY2024-25.
-
Announce that the new points test and IT system will be implemented from 1 July 2026.
Grattan’s Proposed Points Table
(Source from Grattan Institute 2024)
*Grattan has suggested a points table where applicants with at least 400 points are guaranteed an invitation to apply for a visa, while those with below 300 points would be ineligible.
What This Means for You?
*First of all, please calculate your points according to the proposed points table.
1. If Your Points Are Over 400
-
Great news! You are guaranteed an invitation to apply for a points-tested visa.
-
Action: Continue preparing your application confidently.
2. If Your Points Are Between 300 and 400
-
Possibility: You may be invited, but it’s not guaranteed.
-
Suggestion: Work on earning additional points and explore other PR pathways. Unsure about your options? Talk to a Registered Migration Lawyer for professional advice.
3. If Your Points Are Below 300
-
Unfortunately, under the proposed system, you are not eligible for this visa.
-
Advice: Explore alternative PR pathways, such as employer-sponsored programs, especially if you are in a trade occupation. If you are unsure about your options, consult a migration agent for professional guidance.
