Australians love to travel. New Zealanders might be our neighbors and Canadians might be our cousins, but that doesn’t deter us from hitting the road and exploring the globe. With a passport that allows us visa-free travel to over 130 countries, most of which are in Asia, Oceania, or Africa, it’s also very easy for an Australian to leave the country and explore almost every corner of the world.
If you’re an Australian planning your next overseas holiday soon, you might be wondering if there are any countries where you don’t need a visa to enter as an Australian tourist. Well, wonder no more! Here is a list of all the countries that do not require Australians to have a visa before traveling there as tourists.
United States of America (USA)
The United States of America (USA) is the most popular destination for Australians, with a large number of Australian travellers visiting the USA each year. On the other side of things, many Americans visit Australia for holidays and business purposes.
However, you cannot just freely travel to the USA without having any documents or applying for a visa first. You will need an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), which you need to apply online at least 72 hours before your scheduled travel date. The ESTA can be used multiple times as long as it is valid on the day of your departure from USA territory and allows multiple entries into this country during its period of validity.
United Kingdom (UK)
The United Kingdom (UK) offers a 6 month visa-free entry period for Australian passport holders. You can travel to the UK without a visa if you have an Australian passport and intend to stay for no more than 6 months.
However, there is a reciprocal agreement between Australia and the UK that makes it easier for Australians to get short term visas.
For example, if you want to work in the UK or study there as an international student, then you may need a student visa or work permit. If you wish to stay longer than 6 months in any given year then it also becomes necessary that you apply for a tourist type visa which can be easily obtained at any British embassy or consulate worldwide including in Australia itself!
New Zealand
New Zealand is a great place to visit, especially for Australians. It’s only a short flight away and has many cultural similarities.
New Zealand also has visa-free entry for Australian citizens, meaning you won’t have to worry about applying for one before you go.
The weather, food and culture are all similar to Australia’s which makes it perfect for expats looking to get away from home without too much of an adjustment period.
If you love travelling but don’t want the hassle of obtaining visas (or spending money on them), New Zealand should definitely be on your list! Since it’s so close by, travelling there is very easy as well!
Brazil
You can travel to Brazil for up to 90 days without a visa.
The visa will be extended in Brazil, but you’ll need proof of onward travel.
Your passport must be valid for six months after your stay.
You’ll also need a return ticket, proof of sufficient funds and accommodation while in the country.
Canada
Canadians need a visa to visit Australia, but the Canadian government is making it easier for Australians to travel to Canada.
Canadians and Australians have a lot in common. They both share a similar sense of humour, love sports and enjoy wide open spaces.
The Australian Government’s recent changes mean that more eligible Australians travelling by air can use their passport for identification at the airport and when entering the country. This change does not affect those who travel by boat or overland from the United Kingdom, New Zealand or other countries which have visa-free arrangements with Australia.
Singapore
Singapore is a beautiful country. It is a foodies paradise, great for families and shopping. If you’re traveling to Singapore with an Australian passport, the good news is that you don’t need a visa to stay there for up to 90 days. If you’re planning your trip in advance, it’s well worth checking out our guide on how long do visas last? so that you know exactly how long your visa will be valid for when entering or exiting countries while abroad.
Airlines such as Qantas, Emirates and Cathay Pacific fly direct from Sydney and Melbourne into Changi Airport (SIN). You could also try budget airlines like Air Asia who fly from Gold Coast (OOL) or Perth (PER).
Ireland
Ireland has a lot in common with Australia, from its friendly culture to its proximity to Europe. Because Ireland is part of the European Union (EU), Australians can travel there without needing a visa.
The official currency of Ireland is the Euro (€), but most people use British pounds sterling (£) as their unofficial currency for day-to-day transactions. The language spoken in Ireland is English, which makes it easy for Australians to learn and understand.
Switzerland
Switzerland is a mountainous Central European country, home to numerous lakes, villages and the high peaks of the Alps. Its cities contain medieval quarters, with landmarks like capital Bern’s Zytglogge clock tower and Lucerne’s wooden chapel bridge.
Germany
Germany is a country in Western Europe. It’s bordered to the south by France and Switzerland, to the west by Belgium and Luxembourg, to the north by Denmark and Poland, and to the east by Czech Republic and Austria. Germany has a population of over 80 million people.
Germany is also home to many international corporations that sponsor various programs for foreign citizens or organizations. As such, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide with no requirement for visas on arrival!
Italy
Entry requirements for Australia include a valid passport, sufficient funds for your stay and documents for your return or onward travel. You must also be in good health, of good character and not have any criminal convictions.
These countries welcome Australian travellers with open arms.
While you don’t need a visa to travel to these countries, it’s always good to know the details so you can prepare for your trip. Be sure to check the specifics of each country, including passport validity requirements and length of stay allowed. Most also require a visa if you plan on staying over 90 days; make sure you have time to apply if that’s the case! You may also need to pay a fee or apply for a visa before arriving in some countries.
